Alliance Strengthened

19 July 2021

At its July 2021 meeting the Australian Mining Cities Alliance (AMCA) was bolstered with the addition of a new active member, the City of Karratha, an international resource-industry powerhouse and capital of the dynamic Pilbara region of Western Australia.

AMCA Chair John Bowler (Mayor of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder) welcomed the latest new member to the Alliance acknowledging the value that Karratha will add to the group.

“Karratha is central to one of the most economically critical regions in Australia whose production of iron ore has not only underpinned Australia’s economic sustainability but has also facilitated growth in nations across the globe.  It makes perfect sense for Karratha to be a key player in the advocacy for mining cities and regions alongside other iconic mining cities like Kalgoorlie-Boulder, Broken Hill and Mt Isa, and with coal rich Isaac Region.” Mayor Bowler said.

“Together as an alliance we believe we can tackle the common issues and exploit the mutual opportunities with and for our member Councils.”

City of Karratha Mayor Peter Long acknowledged the merits of the AMCA initiative and reflected on Karratha’s place in the Alliance.

“We are strong advocates for both regional Australia and our Pilbara zone in particular and we work continuously to improve the sustainability, economic stability and liveability of our region. As a City, we are keen to address issues such as tax inequality, housing affordability, insurance and airfare costs that are common to mining cities.  We can see great value in working collaboratively with other Councils from around Australia to fight for change where it is needed.”

“The Australian Mining Cities Alliance is an excellent vehicle to engage with politicians from all levels of government to meet the objectives of the Alliance and we look forward to playing our part in its work for the future benefit of the cities and regions it represents.”

Mayor Bowler also announced the appointment of an Executive Officer for the Alliance.

“We are very pleased to have secured the services of Gary Stevenson PSM and his company Stevenson Consulting.  Gary’s knowledge and experience in local government spans four decades across three States of Australia and his most recent roles as CEO of Isaac Regional Council and the City of Perth have exposed him to the many issues that our Members face.”
