2nd OECD Meeting of Mining Regions and Cities
The 2nd OECD meeting of Mining Regions and Cities was hosted in the Northern Territory capital of Darwin from 20-22 November 2018.
Attended by industry, policy makers, academics and Indigenous leaders from around the world, the event culminated in a “call to action” to share respective experiences and establish a robust evidence base in creating inclusive and sustainable economic development of mining regions and cities. This ambition mirrors exactly the ground-breaking efforts of the Australian Mining Cities Alliance which, in the Australian context, is seeking to bring Australia’s mining regions together to learn from each other and to jointly advocate.
The event included a special focus on regional economic development and innovative partnerships between First Nations and the mining and energy industries. AMCA participated at the event with AMCA Chairman and Mayor of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, John Bowler, addressing the opening plenary session.
AMCA also joined a site visit to Nhulunbuy in East Arnhem Land on 23 and 24 November 2018 which showcased the successful, collaborative relationships between the region’s Traditional Owners, the mining industry and Australian and NT Governments.
