NEWS RELEASE
14 May 2024
City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder Mayor Glenn Wilson was elected the new chair of the Australian Mining Cities Alliance (AMCA) with Broken Hill City Council’s Deputy Mayor Cr Jim Hickey elected as his Deputy, at last week’s board meeting.
The election was required due to the recent resignations of former chair Phil Baker (Mt Isa City Council) and Deputy Chair Anne Baker (Issac Regional Council) following the Queensland General elections.
The board welcomed two new Directors, Mount Isa City Council Mayor Peta MacRae, and Isaac Regional Council Mayor Kelly Vea Vea.
The AMCA is a national initiative aimed at addressing shared challenges and opportunities faced by mining towns and is made up of elected members from local governments across the country.
AMCA incoming chair Glenn Wilson said he was honoured to be elected chair and thanked the former Chair and Deputy Chair for their great work in leading AMCA.
“While we might come from opposite sides of the country, the AMCA members all share common challenges and opportunities when it comes to navigating the impacts of the mining sector on our communities,” he said.
“This shared experience gives us a unique opportunity to work together in leveraging strong advocacy programs that have a big impact.
“Ultimately it is our goal to make our regional mining cities more liveable during and beyond the life cycle of mining projects.”
“This fresh leadership creates an energised alliance and continues the legacy created in 2017 in bringing our mining cities together.”
