Mining Cities Focus on Strategic Issues

27 August 2021

At its August 2021 meeting the Australian Mining Cities Alliance (AMCA) signed off on its Constitution amendments and commenced a strategic planning process which in coming months will draw its focus onto some of the most significant issues facing mining cities and regions across Australia.

AMCA Chair John Bowler (Mayor of the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder) reflected on this milestone in the alliance’s journey.

“Issues like housing affordability, adequate services, economic and social sustainability, government re-investment of royalties, impacts of 4IR, transitions to post mining economies, labour market shortages, environmental remediation, incentivised taxation, FIFO impacts, government funding methodologies, air services reliability and affordability and telecommunications reliability are some of the many broader strategic priorities calling for AMCA’s attention at the present time.” Mayor Bowler said.

“AMCA doesn’t need to replicate the work that industries will do in their own development and innovation, nor will it do the work of other levels of government, but together as an alliance we believe we can tackle the common issues and exploit the mutual opportunities with and for our member Councils.”

“Acting as a voice for the residents and businesses in our communities that are affected every day by the enormous scale and scope of the resources sector, we aim to advocate and ensure that their perspective is appropriately heeded by decision-makers in government and industry.” he said.
